Upcoming dates: 26th (22:00 - 22:30), 27th (22:00 - 22:30), and 28th (18:00 - 18:30) of May 2022 at Liebig12 in the frame of Performing Arts Festival Berlin.

For these re-enactments of "Achilles and Tortoise", we decided to focus on the video part of the performance on the present experience of Tetiana. She comes from Kyiv. She lives in Germany now, and she cannot reach back to her family in Ukraine due to the War. Here you can see about the performance.

Kornieieva-Marrese is an artist duo based in Berlin. Kornieieva and Marrese are organizers of the festival in Berlin "preserve memories - provide energy", with the support of other artists and art institutions, which include performance art. The first edition of the festival was in July 2021 in Berlin-Lichtenberg. The second edition will be in Berlin-Friedrichshain in May 2022.

Here you can watch short films shot in Berlin, parts of the performance "Achilles and Tortoise". We considered them short films because they told a story, and we used it in the piece in that sense. Not just as a graphic visual element. It is related to identity fragmentation, which is the pivot of the performance, as you can read below.

preserve memories - provide energy

It is a Festival that Kornieieva-Marrese, with the support of other artists and art institutions, organise in Berlin once per year. The first edition was in Berlin-Lichtenberg in July 2021. The second will be in Berlin-Friedrichshain in May 2022. Due to the cultural relevance of the Festival, for the first edition, organized during the pandemic, they received a letter of support directly from Dr Klaus Lederer, Senator for Culture and Europe in Berlin.

For the first edition, Kornieieva, in addition to the art side, designed the logo, flyers and posters of the event.

Achilles and Tortoise

"Achilles and Tortoise" is the main project currently on. Born in Berlin, it has shown in Serbia too. It will be back in Berlin in Spring.

It is a performance art piece about identity fragmentation and the perception of the body through Internet technologies. The context is about cities in different time zones. Berlin is in the UTC+1, and Kyiv is in the UTC+2 time zone. There is a time zone gap of one hour. When people talk through the Internet, this gap seems to disappear. It seems strange. They remain in their cities but, at the same time, they are elsewhere. They are able not only to talk but also to see each other. They experienced a sort of bodies presence. But in what kind of space and time, this connection happen? It looks like they are close, but they are still far. This situation reminded us of the "Achilles and the Tortoise" paradox. It seems that technology can fill this gap through the fragmentation of ourselves. We are not communicating directly. Each of us communicates with a mathematical representation of the other that appears through the machine. Despite the time zone gap, we live the same present. But it is a present that seems possible and impossible, at the same time because only the fragmentation of ourselves allows us to communicate with each other. This paradoxical situation is experienced daily, by a lot of people, for different reasons. We felt the urgency to explore it through the prism of our art practice.

Instagram

We manage an Instagram account that we use before and during the performance: achilles.and.tortoise. We use the Instagram account before when we are temporarily in other cities to post pictures simultaneously from different time zones. Furthermore, we use the account during the performance to move the action on the online device, asking the audience to look into the smartphone during the show.
